Veterans Memorial Committee
Meeting Minutes    CORRECTED
June 29, 2010
Committee Members
Present: Edith Stillson Fred Mellish Peter Korbet Bob Dickinson
deForest Bearse Chip Cobb Aaron Fitzherbert

1. Approve minutes from the last meeting: May 25, 2010
Edith Stillson motioned to approve the minutes of the May 25th meeting as presented. Bob Dickinson seconded the motion and all were in favor.

2. Stone Cutting Update: Aaron
The stones are cut and waiting to come back. Gurney will transport them back to Aaron's place of business in Ascutney.

Veterans' Names
There was discussion regarding the idea of putting the veterans' names on the monument. It is possible to put them on the upright columns, the base of the monument, or on a left-over boulder (like Windsor's idea). Aaron will consider the design possibilities and determine the costs.

Discussion led to discussion of the task of finding the names of all of the veterans who are eligible to have their name on the monument and/or in the Roll of Honor (i.e those who entered military service as residents of Weathersfield). Fred has continued to research. Chip will compare notes with Fred at a later date.

Fred Mellish expressed concern that there may be drainage or electrical lines under the spot where the monument will be placed. deForest was asked to have the Town Manager contact "Dig Safe" for assistance.

3. Inscription
In 2005-2006, the committee had discussed possible inscriptions for the monument. Fred Crowley had suggested two lines from the poem, In Flanders Fields:

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high

Aaron cautioned the committee not to put too much onto the monument. No decision was made regarding an inscription choice.

4. Dedication
Chip has invited Lt. Governor Brian Dubie, Adjutant Major General Michael D. Dubie, the state chaplain, and Senator Sanders to the dedication ceremony.

5. Educational Component Plan
Chip has asked the school board to take ownership of the educational component - have them work with the kids to come up with ideas and plans. Don Hart said he would speak to the new principal about the project as well. Cookie Shand offered photos of a photo display board she had seen and thought might be useful for the ed component. Different themes, supported by photos and printed items, could be displayed on the board and periodically changed. The committee could advertise for materials.

6. SAPA TV event coverage
Bruce Johnson of SAPA TV has offered to work with Aaron and the committee to do a video history of the monument.

7. Walk-a-thon Results
The walk-a-thon brought in $615.

8. Comments from Citizens
The flag pole on the remnant green in Ascutney has been re-painted and re-set. It is awaiting a flag. Nathalie Whitney offered to loan a flag given to her brother. She would like it back when it needs to be retired. The Town is looking into photovoltaics to illuminate the flag since the electrical line will be too expensive.

Next meeting date
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 27th , 2010, at 7:00 PM in the Town Office.

At 8:30 PM, Aaron Fitzherbert motioned to adjourn the meeting. Fred Mellish seconded the motion and all were in favor.

NOTE: Committee meetings will be held on the LAST Tuesday of every month unless otherwise noted.

Respectfully submitted,

deForest Bearse
