Weathersfield Veterans Memorial Meeting Minutes April 26, 2011 Members Present: Bob Dickinson, Fred Mellish, Jeff Slade, Lisa Slade, Edith Stillson, Gloria Ballantine, Peter Korbet, deForest Bearse 1. Approve minutes of previous meeting Lisa Slade motioned to approve the minutes of the March 29th meeting as presented. Gloria Ballantine seconded the motion and all were in favor.
2. Memorial Day Planning Jeff Slade motioned to authorize purchasing an 18"-20" wreath of real flowers from Sugarbush florists for the Memorial Day ceremony at a cost not to exceed $100. Lisa Slade seconded the motion and all were in favor. It was agreed that for the Veterans Day ceremony we look into the purchase of a silk flower wreath instead of using real flowers.
Edith Stillson motioned to authorize the purchase of six 11" x 17" posters and six 8 ½" x 11" posters for the advertising of the Memorial Day ceremony from Doolittles. A maximum cost was not specified. Gloria Ballantine seconded the motion and all were in favor.
3. Education Component Gloria Ballantine gave an update of the education component committee's activities. See attached report.
4. 250th Celebration Planning The committee will sell popcorn and water at the celebration. Lisa will make arrangements to borrow the popcorn maker from the Windsor Rec Department and will purchase all necessary supplies. The committee will reimburse her expenses after the celebration. We will set up in the Memorial Grove before the start of the parade (the Center Road will be closed to traffic then). Jeff Slade will provide the tables and canopy. Volunteers need to bring their own chairs. The photos of the committee's work and the Roll of Honor will also be set up.
5. Other Business The committee received a request from the Select Board to provide the Board with an opinion regarding Peter Korbet's request to have the Perkinsville Green re-named as the Weathersfield Veterans Memorial Park. The committee was reluctant to make a decision at that time and agreed to discuss it further at the next meeting.
The next annual Walk-a-thon will be held on June 1, 2011. Lisa will send out fliers and sponsor sheets. There was discussion of inviting the Weathersfield School kids to participate.
At 8:00 PM Gloria Ballantine motioned to adjourn the meeting. Jeff Slade seconded the motion and all were in favor. The next meeting will held on May 24, 2011.
Respectfully submitted, deForest Bearse
ATTACHMENT Vet. Mem. Committee Meeting April 26, 2011 Chip Cobb, Ginger Wimberg, Gloria Ballantine and Cookie Shand met in the Conference Room at the school on April 14th. (Principal JeanMarie Oakman was not able to attend at the last minute.)
We reviewed the general purpose of the Educational Component Subcommittee and came up with the following:
6. Ginger will remind students of the project opportunity. There has been some breakdown in communication in her opinion at school. There are no oral morning announcements at the beginning or at end of each school day. Teachers were unclear about their role of reminding students about this project and contacting Ginger. The school's schedule makes this difficult as it is. 7. For the rest of the school year, participating students will work on the interview process with the person they have selected. A narrative will be written, which will be displayed for the 250th Town Anniversary. There will be requests made for photos that can be copied for display as well. We shared questions developed by deForest and Fred and added more to the list. Those interviewed do not have to be from Weathersfield. Seventeen individuals have agreed to be possible candidates to be interviewed. 8. The goal is to have at least four students participate in this first phase. Gloria will speak to JeanMarie about having this project become part of the curriculum for the next school year. 9. Chip will check in with students upon his return from Florida. In the meantime, Gloria, Cookie and Ginger have each taken on at least one of the four students to support. 10. Chip would like to see Memorial Day and Veterans Day services each year, which would incorporate the school kids in some way. 11. Chip has asked us to think about items that we will need to buy for these presentations and their maintenance (large TV screen for ongoing displays in the school lobby, a portable flipchart, photo copying expenses, etc.)
